I originally joined TWI as a Project
Leader in 1977 immediately after graduating from Nottingham University
with a BSc in Physics and Applied Physics. I worked for six years in the
Micro-joining Section, on a variety of projects mainly connected with
wire bonding for electronic devices.
After six years, I left (as was common
then) to raise a family, only returning to work in 1993, in a very
part-time capacity as an administrator in the Quality and Safety Group.
As my children grew up, I increased my hours at work and was given more
responsibility within the Group. In 2000, I was promoted to Quality
Officer, working under the Quality and Safety Manager to ensure the
integrity of TWI’s quality management system. Soon after, I was given
the opportunity of assisting with the introduction of an environmental
management system compliant to ISO 14001.
Throughout my career at TWI, I have
benefitted from both internal and external training. Since re-joining
the company, I have attended many courses on auditing and certification,
as well as on health and safety and environmental issues.
In 2007, I was appointed to the position
of Quality and Safety Manager with the job profile of Section Manager. I
was promoted to Group Manager, Quality and Safety in 2009, reporting
directly to the CEO. I am now responsible for all the certificated
management systems (quality, environment, health and safety) within TWI
as well as having involvement in security and business continuity.
In truth, this career path was not
planned but is the result of TWI’s continuing support and encouragement.
In particular, TWI’s management development training, together with my
technical background, has enabled me to develop professionally into new
areas of work which are both challenging and fulfilling.
