Welding with Chocolate

11-13 March 2010
Big Bang event (Go Global Section)
Manchester Central

The Welding Institute is taking part in the Engineering UK educational event. Fifteen to twenty thousand young people aged 7 to 19 are expected to visit the exhibition with their schools and colleges. Teachers, educationalists, and politicians will also be there.

This event promises to be memorable with massive stands from organisations like Shell, Airbus, National Grid, Siemens and more, lots of exciting competitions including the National Science & Engineering Competition, Young Engineers, CREST and many more. Two popular shows, 'Brainiac Live' and 'Bang Goes the Theory' will also be live. Visitors will be able to take part in some amazing workshops, anything from solving a murder, to modelling how meteors destroyed the dinosaurs and of course welding with chocolate!

Welding with chocolate is the brainwave experiment of Dr Philippa Moore, one of our bright young Senior Project Leaders. She ran the experiment at the Cambridge Science Fair last year and when it was submitted to Engineering UK they were bowled over. She also ran an air crash investigation at the 2009 Arkwright Careers day at TWI Cambridge!

Attending The Big Bang will give young people the opportunity to experience really cool science and technology in action. It is a fantastic opportunity for The Welding Institute to take part. We aim to stimulate young minds by demonstrating the endless possibilities of metallurgy, opening up questions about materials science and signifying the endless possibilities of welding and joining careers.
