Electron beam welding for equipment, consumables and materials
Equipment
TWI's electron beam group designs equipment for applications at powers from 50W to 150kW in industry sectors from medical to power. We also design beam diagnostic systems, and special processing equipment - e.g. high speed programmable deflection used for EB texturing. Most of the equipment operated at TWI has been designed in house.
TWI makes the equipment design available under licence arrangements with equipment providers. Custom equipment can be designed for special applications by TWI and then built to our design by equipment manufacturers.

Electron beams have long been used in the vacuum melting of materials. TWI has designed evaporators of up to 250kW beam power, used for material processing. We also have provided advice in the design of special coating equipment based around electron beam evaporation.
Electron Beam welding for the pulp and paper industry
The pulp and paper industry make extensive use of welding fabrication and are concerned with acuracy, avoidance of distortion and residual stresses. TWI have demonstrated that the application of EB welding assistedby prediction of distortion and residual stresses by finite element analysis can be of great benefit in these applications.
The following are of particular interest to this sector:
- Materials
Electron beam welding - materials aspects - Reduced pressure EB equipment
Reduced pressure electron beam welding - High voltage power supplies
High voltage power supplies for electron beam welding - Reduced pressure and non-vacuum electron beam welding
- Electron beam probes
