Ultrasonic Welding of Blood Filter
Ultrasonic welding has played a major role in the development of a novel filtration method for autologous transfusion, i.e. recycling a patients own blood in the operating theatre. Process
The sensitive filter material is cased between two ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) parts. One half features a 0.3mm projection which acts as the energy director. Parts are held under pressure and welded at an ultrasonic frequency of 20kHz within seconds using Herfurth 1800W USM 100 Series 3 machine for Haemocell plc.Benefits of ultrasonic welding
- Hermetic seal
- Localised melting
- Short weld time
- Easily automated
- Design flexibility
