Globalisation Assistance
Assistance with moving a gas regulator assembly line to Romania
TWI's Manufacturing Support Group was asked to review a mains gas regulator assembly line, operating in France with two objectives in mind:
- - to identify areas where lean processes could be implemented
- - to identify any issues or concerns with moving this assembly line to Romania.
The line, materials and operations were reviewed by TWI, and suggestions were made to improve the work cell design, incorporate visual aids (5S), implementation of a Kan Ban system and the need for Total Productive Maintenance. Information was provided on calculation of Takt time to react to customer demand, and standardised work to allow operator change and balance.
Specific risks identified with the relocation were: the need to verify the mains utility supply matching; the availability of machine part spares; training of the new workforce, potentially using personnel from the French site initially; and the need to embed lean attitudes into the culture of an organisation, for which a new facility would provide a good opportunity.
Virtual Network
Manufacturing Support Group (MSG) manages an advanced design centre for the European Divisions of a multinational member company. The mission is to provide technical support using centres of excellence to the company across all areas of technology. This support is provided using TWI experts in short technical enquiries, but also involves:
- Other research and technology organisations (RTOs)
- Universities
- Independent consultants
- Research institutes
- Specialist technology providers in activities such as consultations, design reviews, technical liaison visits and projects, all facilitated by MSG
All technologies are covered through a variety of support programmes.
Manufacturing Best Practice
- Repair of hydropower station turbine casings to a tight deadline
- Lead-time halved in heat exchanger production
- 15% Productivity Increase from Lean Manufacturing
- Lean Manufacturing reduces WIP by 35%
