Free access to technologies, facilities and expertise for manufacturers involved in composite materials
(Issued 1 February 2005.
Free, in-depth technical support is now available to UK companies involved in or moving into any aspect of composite materials manufacture or use.
The Technology Transfer activity of the recently formed National Composites Network (NCN) is enabling direct access to technologies plus nationwide facilities and expertise through a range of free services.
Jointly funded by the DTI and industry, the services are managed by Cambridge-based materials joining specialist TWI Ltd (www.twi.co.uk).
Delivery of the services is supported by the co-ordinated resources of the NCN ( www.ncn-uk.co.uk) which connects all areas of UK composites expertise across all technologies and industry sectors.
Involving a range of organisations with appropriate composites know-how, the free services are based on the same proven structure utilised by TWI in the successful operation of its other technology transfer programmes:
- Technical Helpdesk on 01223 894 662 - one-to-one access to experts for technical advice and information.
- Online Technical Information at www.ncn-uk.co.uk - 24/7 access to know-how including guides to best practice.
- Technology Demonstrations - access to latest materials, processes and equipment to show the potential of implementing proven technology from one sector into another.
- Product and Process Reviews - up to 2 days expert review at a company to investigate technical problems or help with implementing improved processes or materials.
- Feasibility Studies - up to 5 days examination of issues arising from a Product and Process Review, possibly involving testing and trials.
- Near-market R&D or Prototyping Support - up to 7 days detailed work following a Feasibility Study, typically to introduce innovation into a product or manufacturing process.
Companies wishing to use the services should contact the Helpdesk on 01223 894 662 or email info@ncn-uk.co.uk
The services, which offer up to 14 days' in-depth technical support, are primarily aimed at small and medium-sized companies, which generally do not have easy access to extensive, specialised technical resources.
The objective is to help firms develop their capabilities and competitiveness by providing opportunities for achieving innovation and exploiting best practice and improved manufacturing processes.
