Corrosion and corrosion mitigation

Corrosion

Corrosion and corrosion mitigation is one of the most significant costs faced by industry, accounting for about US$1.4 billion per year in the USA for the E&P sector, US$1.7 billion for chemicals and US$3.7 billion in refining and downstream ( www.corrosioncost.com).

Material selection and the influence of joining processes on material behaviour are vital to cost effective construction and long-term operation of assets.

Process conditions including highly sour service, mild sour service and sweet corrosion, and external environments/sea water handling, need consideration in relation to environmentally assisted cracking, corrosion fatigue and corrosion failure modes for carbon steels and corrosion resistant alloys.

Integration of corrosion expertise with metallurgy, thermal spraying, NDE and fitness-for-purpose capabilities at TWI provides a service called upon for both failure investigation, asset integrity and R&D. TWI has specialised laboratories for electrochemical and large-scale testing in H 2 S/CO 2 and under cathodic protection.
