Laser processing

TWI works with its Industrial Members offering expertise and technology to help increase efficiency, enhance product quality and reliability and introduce innovation.

Laser materials processing includes:

  • welding
  • cutting
  • surfacing
  • heat treatment
Part of TWI's laser facility

Services range from feasibility studies to full project support for new laser applications, from initial trials through to production cell specification and commissioning.

Staff are also available to act as consultants to Members on all aspects of laser materials processing.

Although TWI has both CO 2 and Nd:YAG laser processing facilities, Nd:YAG is more suitable for flexible manufacture as is can be transmitted by optical fibres.

Nd:YAG laser facilities at TWI include:
  • Beam combiner unit with 9kW capability
  • 4kW, two 3kW and 2kW laser sources
  • Three integrated processing cells
  • 7 and 6 axis robotic manipulation
  • Two beam simultaneous welding capacity
  • Hybrid laser-arc welding facilities
  • Automated seam tracking for easy set-up
  • Integrated with various x-y or rotary tables
