Non-destructive testing of thermally sprayed coatings
Expertise
TWI's experience in the inspection of thermally sprayed coatings has included the following project work.
| Ultrasonic image showing variations in the coating layer of an HVOF sprayed panel. |
|
- High frequency ultrasonic examination of HVOF coated test pieces to quantify changes in coating quality and to correlate these changes with variations in the spraying process.
- Acoustic-emission testing to define the failure point of different coating systems during 4-point bend testing.
- Phase-modulated thermal imaging of hydroxyapatite coated prosthetics for the detection of coating-to-substrate disbonds.
- Mathematical modelling of the interaction of 'thermal waves' with simulated coating defects, to estimate the capability of thermal inspection techniques for different coating systems.
Resource
- comprehensive range of equipment for ultrasonic, radiographic, electromagnetic, liquid penetrant, magnetic particle & thermographic inspection
- advice on selecting & applying the most appropriate inspection procedure
- independent, third party assessment of inspection data
- training in conventional & advanced NDT techniques
