Stainless Steel Fabrication - best practice workshop

Participants at the Stainless Steel Fabrication Workshop

Over 80 people attended a technical workshop on the Best Practice in Stainless Steel Fabrication hosted by Outokumpu in Sheffield. This was a repeat of an equally successful event held in 2004. The event, organised by TWI, Outokumpu and BSSA, under the Joining Forces Yorkshire and Humber programme, included an introduction to stainless steels, traditional and alternative fabrication methods and post fabrication processing of the materials.

Between these presentations, there were organised 'hum' groups, where the delegates were divided into groups to discuss issues that they had with working with stainless steel. These issues were collected together and then presented to the entire delegation so that everyone could pass comment on each of the issues, and the experts could impart their knowledge. Topics for discussion included choice of welding consumable, corrosion and general welding problems.

The day closed with a tour of the impressive SMACC (Stainless Melting and Continuous Casting) facility at Outokumpu.

In addition to the presentations, a number of companies, including TWI, BSSA and Outokumpu, exhibited their products and services.

Feedback from the event was overwhelmingly positive, and it was agreed that it was a useful networking event for everyone who attended. Indeed there were a number of enquiries on whether similar events would be taking place for other materials. Although no such events are planned, the Joining Forces Yorkshire and Humber events team are always happy to receive suggestions for future events.
