55th Annual Dinner of the Welding & Joining Society

Held at Swallow Hotel Stockton Friday 18th April 2008

In proposing the toast to the Teesside Branch of the Welding & Joining Society, some 170 members and invited guests heard Dr Tony Featherstone Director of Operations for ECITB give a review of Industry and the importance of Training and getting young people involved in Engineering.

Mr Bernard Overfield Vice Chairman introduced a top table of Branch Officers and distinguished guests from local industry and other professional institutions in addition to senior representatives from the Welding & Joining Society and the Welding Institute headquarters in Cambridge. Dr Christoph Wiesner Director of Research and Development replied on behalf of the Welding Institute.

Teesside Branch President, Dr. Frank Fitzgerald CBE presented awards to local students as follows:

The Best Practical Welding Trainee of 2008 in the Teesside Area from a Training Establishment:

Christopher Proudman Nominated by Neta Training Stockton
Christopher is an ECITB Apprentice Welder he is employed by Amec at Sabic North Tees
Christopher was also awarded the Norman Skirving Memorial Award; Janet Skirving presented this award (Norman passed away in 2007 and he had been a lifelong member of the Teesside Branch)

The Best City & Guilds Welding Craft Student of 2008 in the Teesside Area:

Matthew Bendelow Nominated by HARTLEPOOL COLLEGE
Matthew is an Apprentice Welder he is following the ECITB TECSKILLS Programme he is employed by Cordell

The Best ONC/OND Welding & Fabrication Technician of 2008 in the Teesside Area:

Steven Wilson Nominated by HARTLEPOOL COLLEGE
Steven is a Welder Employed by Heerema Hartlepool he is currently studying for his HNC at Hartlepool College

The Best Advanced Welding Technician of 2008 in the Teesside Area:

Lee Melvin Nominated by HARTLEPOOL COLLEGE
Lee is a Welding Engineer for Darchem; Lee has completed his HNC at Hartlepool College and is now studying for a Foundation Degree in Metallurgy at Bradford University.
