Winner of the first Richard Dolby - Rolls Royce Prize

A young engineer from the UK has won the first Richard Dolby - Rolls Royce Prize, presented at The Welding Institute's AGM on 11 July 2007.

Duncan Scaife, a Project Engineer at the University of Greenwich, beat off competition from two other finalists at the presentation final on 22 June.

The award is run by the Younger Members' Committee (YMC) of The Welding Institute and is designed specifically for younger members. It awards a £1000 prize and is given to a person demonstrating success in, and enthusiasm for, welding, joining and/or materials engineering at an early stage of their career. Sponsored by Rolls-Royce plc, the award is named after a former Director of Research and Technology at TWI.

The three shortlisted presentations were:

The concept utility vehicle project by Duncan Scaife of the Greenwich University

Support tools for the design and manufacture of thin plate welded structures by Duncan Camilleri of the University of Strathclyde

Development of a direct metal laser deposition repair for Rolls-Royce plc's Trent 500 seal segments by Philip Carroll and Choon Yen Kong of TWI.
