Fossil Fuels and Hydropower

Fossil fuels and hydropower are regarded as the most mature of the power generating systems. Nevertheless, both industries continue to be active in the development of new fabrication, repair and maintenance technologies.

The sector is characterised by large, capital-intensive plant with operating lives running from 25 years to, in the case of hydro plant, more than 100 years. Materials range from advanced steel and nickel alloys through to concrete civil structures. Power plants operate over a wide range of temperatures while coping with erosive and corrosive media and a variety of fatigue mechanisms.

TWI provides impartial technical expertise on every aspect of reducing the whole-life cost of power generating assets, and provides a single-point access to technical and project management support across the power-generation sector, including renewables.

The breadth of in-house expertise offered in materials, fabrication, repair, non-destructive testing (NDT), structural integrity, O&M optimisation, and training enables TWI to offer a cost-effective and fully integrated service.

This service is deployed for both laboratory-based research, design and development (RD&D) projects and in-field support such as plant fabrication and repair, where TWI provides specialist welding, non-destructive engineering (NDE) and materials expertise.
