Hydropower

Hydro power enjoys inherent technical, economic and environmental benefits that make it an important element of both the current and future world energy mix. This is particularly true for developing countries where growing demand for power is complemented by significant untapped hydro potential. For countries with an established hydropower capacity increased plant life and assured safety at lowest environmental impact are key drivers.

Hydropower has unique structural integrity problems compared with other industries. This stems from issues such as concrete encasement of components, physical size of components and low temperature operation. While hydropower plant benefits from long operating life this also brings its own issues with ageing asset management.

TWI provides a unique single point access to world-class structural integrity, materials, inspection, repair, and fabrication expertise.

TWI’s proven risk based asset life optimisation methodology, RISKWISE, is ideally suited for use on pressure systems. When deployed as part of an asset investment planning strategy it could realise benefits for hydro power similar to those seen when employed in other industries.

TWI has a demonstrable track record in penstock integrity, plant inspection and repair development supported by advanced inspection and NDE techniques.
