A world first in phased array qualification

TWI recently launched its new programme in Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing training. Course content includes basic phased array theory, development of phased array techniques and critical defect detection sizing of butt and nozzle welds and Level 2 certification under the CSWIP qualification.

The first course was run for a large Industrial Member company. It took the form of an intensive two week instruction period culminating in a one day examination covering theory and data analysis for defect sizing. Feedback from the attendees was very positive and the company has requested TWI to set up and run a further two similar courses during 2006.

TWI is also the home of the only woman in the world to hold a Level 2 CSWIP qualification in phased array ultrasonic testing. Delphine Caravaca joined the Non-Destructive Testing section in 2005. To validate a post graduate qualification in NDT, she worked for EADS as part of her study, a TWI Industrial Member company in France and has also undertaken research on the use of piezoelectric sensors in locating and measuring defects.

It is clear from TWI experience that acceptance of Phased Array technology is growing among all industry sectors. The introduction of small, relatively inexpensive inspection systems which are - most importantly - portable, has meant that on-site testing is now becoming more and more popular. This does, however, emphasise the need for operators to be qualified to a recognised standard so that the results gained by this type of inspection may be accepted by industry.
