A New Award: The Richard Dolby - Rolls-Royce Prize

The Welding & Joining Society Younger Members' Committee has launched a new award to be presented biennually, with the first award due to be presented in 2007. The YMC is very grateful to Dr R E Dolby, CBE, who has given his name to the award, and to Rolls-Royce plc who have very kindly agreed to sponsor the prize.

The cash prize of £1,000 will be awarded to the young person (or to a group of people, if involved in a joint project), who have no more than five years experience after finishing full-time education. Those eligible for consideration should be in membership of The Welding Institute/Welding & Joining Society and will be able to demonstrate success in, and enthusiasm for, welding, joining and/or materials engineering.

Applicants will be requested to submit a brief written description (no more that four A4 pages) of a recent technical engineering project. Applicants short-listed for a finals presentation day to be held at TWI in April 2007 will be asked to give a 20 minute presentation based on their project before the YMC judging panel.

The award is not based solely on technical success and candidates' commitment and enthusiasm for their subject will form a significant part of the judging criteria.

There will be four types of applicants:

  • WJS Branch nominations
  • TWI Member Company nominations
  • University/College nominations
  • Independent

Further details and an application form can be found on the Professional and WJS website www.twi.co.uk/professional in the Younger Members Section or by application to the WJS office at TWI. E-mail: wjs@twi.co.uk.

The deadline for applications is 23 March 2007.
