New facility studies flame straightening effects

Fabricators and steel suppliers can now assess effects of flame straightening using a new purpose-designed test facility at TWI. The new apparatus was developed after a UK Industrial Member commissioned TWI to examine effects of thermal correction procedures on a range of TMCR (thermomechanically controlled rolled), normalised rolled and normalised steels.

Thermal and strain cycles experienced during flame straightening are realistically and reproducibly simulated in the apparatus which takes a testpiece approximately 0.5 x 1.5m. After removal from the apparatus, the testpiece is screened to identify which regions have suffered the greatest loss in strength and toughness. The tensile strength and Charpy toughness of these regions are then fully characterised using standard procedures. TWI's new facility provides a low cost, standardised means of assessing and comparing how strength and toughness degrade after flame straightening.
