Mast repair maintains communication
Brian Bartlett from TWI's Arc Welding Department braved freezing temperatures and high winds to repair a mast at Peterborough for National Telecommunications (formerly IBA). A defect in the 250 foot mast had been discovered by the company during routine inspection. The defective (cold lap) weld was found at 50 feet between a vertical tubular section and a cross support bar. The defect (23-30mm in length) was ground out and then checked using a liquid penetrant technique before it was welded by manual metal arc.
