Summary

"In comparison with friction stir welding, some welding processes look very much 20th century"
The EuroStir ® project on European Industrialisation of Friction Stir Welding now has 33 Collaborators from 6 different Eureka countries. A matrix-style work programme has been proposed and accepted by the Project Steering Group.

Objectives of the reference period

  • The Project Manager to issue a matrix of the work programme of all 6 Tasks
  • The Chairman of the Technical Committee to develop a binding reporting schedule
  • To hold a Technical Committee Meeting and a Project Steering Group Meeting on 9 & 10 August 2001.
  • To issue a press release to the editors of 150 technical magazines
  • To publish a WWW based brochure, promoting the services of the participating SMEs
  • To involve at least two more UK based, large companies as User Collaborators
  • To prepare the Annual Consortium Meeting to be attended by all Collaborators

Achievements

During the reporting period the Collaborators have achieved the following:
  • The first Newsletter with 14 pages was issued to all collaborators
  • Company Profiles were published by 8 Collaborators
  • Further Company Profiles were supplied for publishing
  • The matrix of the first year's work programme was issued
  • A Technical Committee Meeting and Project Steering Group Committee were held at TWI and were well attended
  • The use of vacuum clamps for friction stir welding was demonstrated by TWI
  • A reporting schedule has been developed

EuroStir ® Collaborators

Thirty-three companies have signed Collaboration Agreements prior to 30 November 2001 as listed in Table 1. This table shows whether they are a Member of the Technical Committee (TC), a Member of the Project Steering Group (PSB) or are waiting for approval by the PSG (to be app), because they were not listed in the original proposal:
