  • ASM International offers information on membership, events, activities and products, many online publications, information on materials related standards, career center, training and document delivery from the ASM library.
    They offer extensive industry news with free alerts by e-mail. Contents listings are provided for Advanced Materials & Processes (AM&P) and Heat Treating Progress (monthly technical magazines) with access to full text online for members, and a searchable archive of tables of contents, with abstracts of articles plus an e-mail alert service of tables of contents and a free e-newsletter. This is now a community site - on registering you will be asked for a profile of your interests, and also to give a short biography so the rest of the members of the community know who you are. This site hosts the pages of The Thermal Spray Society which include a discussion list, events calendar, list of relevant American standards and an online glossary of terms.   • ASME is the American Society of Mechanical Engineers' website, offering an overview of the society, membership, news and public affairs for engineers, their technical programmes, list of meetings and conferences, publications, information about their codes and standards, professional development, and jobs.   • Materials Research Society offer information on what the MRS is, membership, career services, meetings, publications, sections and university chapters, awards, fellowships and corporate participation. An online membership directory is also included. Searchable archive and alert services for tables of contents from MRS Bulletin, Materials Research and the full text - free to members - of MRS Internet Journal of Nitride Semiconductor Research are available.   • The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society give information on the organisation, membership, meetings, conferences and publications. Includes indexes and archive for JOM, Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A and B and Journal of Electronic Materials, has the capability for document and webinair ordering, and includes an e-library for members.   • The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining offer information on advantages of membership, forthcoming events, educational activities, professional development, publications, services offered to business and industry, library and information service, a supplier marketplace and links to other materials sites. Holds tables of contents and abstracts for recent issues of twenty one journals. Of particular interest is the online journal Science and Technology of Welding and Joining .   • The National Metals Technology Centre (NAMTEC) includes information on Namtec as an organisation and the projects with which it is involved, its services in research and development, technical help, training and events, and business support. [last looked at on 5 December 2007]

  • Intute: science, engineering and technology, (formerly PSIgate - Physical Sciences Information Gateway) is the portal to physical sciences information for UK academia. Coverage includes materials science and engineering, offering annotated links to information on materials engineering and science generally, chemicals and materials safety, construction and building materials, electronic and thermionic materials, materials properties, materials testing and characterisation, metals, metallurgy and corrosion, polymers, ceramics and composites, and 'other materials', including medical devices, paper, textiles, silk and smart materials.   • AZoM- The A to Z of Materials is an online encyclopedia of materials developed in collaboration with the Institute of Materials, CERAM Research, Rapra Technology, Institute of Materials Engineering, Australasia, Australasian Ceramic Society, European Powder Metallurgy Association, Titanium Information Group, International Institute of Synthetic Rubber Producers and Granta Design, as a free materials knowledge base and news service for the engineering, design and materials community to promote use of advanced materials.   • SteelNet is offered by the USA Steel Manufacturers Association. It gives information about the SMA and a list of SMA Member Companies with links to their websites. The New! section includes some interesting presentations giving statistics and trends for the industry. Uses Frames and animation.   • The International Iron and Steel Institute offers Worldsteel as a global forum for the steel industry. It provides a varied site with access to world statistics, industry news and links to other steel sites. It also has a section on FAQ's and lists of publications, many of which are available in electronic form.   • The American Iron and Steel Institute's 'Steel Works', offers information about the organisation, details of publications and events, legal and political issues, statistics on the North American steel market, features on the properties and uses of steel, and news of the industry.   • Steel Times International Merged with Steel Times in October 2001, this is an e-journal on a subscription basis for the Steel Industry, with information on the European and International scene. It provides advertising and events. An archive of issues for the years 2003 - 2005 is included. [last looked at 16 May 2008]

  • STEELynx is a guide to steelmaking and steel-related technologies on the WWW from Cathy D. Stewart. Welding links are presented as US non-profit, US government, international, academic, commercial and publications. It includes steelmaking resources listing steel companies, non-profit government and academic sites, commercial services, publishers and metasites. Also covered are ironmaking, casting, ceramics, corrosion, galvanising, heat treating, metallurgy, and many other related areas.   • The North American Steel Alliance represents steel producers in the USA and Canada. Most information is available only to members. Requires Flash to get into the site. [last looked at on 16 May 2008]

  • The Iron & Steel Statistics Bureau, produced by ISSB Limited, which maintains a database of the international trade in steel and steelmaking products, provides data on the world steel industry, and a commentary on the current position of the industry.   • UK Steel, a division of the eef, offers industry news, key UK steel statistics, basic information on steel making and a buyer's guide. It also offers the ability to purchase the latest edition of the Steel Specifications handbook, and online access on a subscription basis to the electronic version of this publication, Steel Spec.   • Key to Metals is a subscription database, available via the web or on CD-ROM, for finding materials properties and location of suppliers for steels and non-ferrous metals. [last looked at on 16 May 2008]

  • OECD Directorate for Science, Technology and Industry, Steel gives access to information such as steel market developments, reports of conferences, and lists of statistics and publications available. Online access is available for purchasers of 'The Iron and Steel Industry: online 2008 edition'. [last looked at on 16 May 2008]

  • The Association for Iron and Steel Technology, an international member-based organisation, formed from the merger of the Iron and Steel Society and the Association of Iron and Steel Engineers, gives industry news and information on its activities including events and publications.   • Steel Recycling Institute offers information on uses of steel in construction, cans, cars and appliances with emphasis on recycling. Statistics on steel recycling rates in North America are given. Several publications are available online, including information on the US Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Industrial Design (LEED) rating system.   • steelonthenet.com offers industry news, trade statistics, events listing, supplier database for the steel manufacturing industry, links pages, publications, short strategic appraisals of major companies in the sector and items to purchase such as forecasts, feasibility studies and publications.   • About.com Metals Apply now's metals blog. Includes metals suppliers, basic metals properties, a glossary and a photo gallery. Also includes Stainless Steel Appeal giving information about the uses of stainless steel in the home. [last looked at on 16 May 2008]

  • Industry Standards in Detail is a listing by iSteelAsia of steel standards and material grades cross references. Based on Japanese standards, similar standards and grades, including International, American, British, German, French and Russian standards, are tabulated. Some information is not simple to extract, for example, the tabulations of Japanese to other standard grades for corrosion and heat resisting, tool steels and special purpose steels standards give only grade designations with no standards numbers for countries other than Japan.   • All Metals & Forge offer information on the company and its products. Registered users have free access to 'white papers' - reports by the company with useful statistics and trends information, a dictionary of metallurgical terms, metals specifications, and MetalsWatch quarterly metals market newsletter.   • Arcelor Mittal offer information on their company structure; products and finances; a media area, including speeches, presentations and publications, an image gallery and industry news. Uses Frames and Java. [last looked at on 16 May 2008]

  • Corus (formerly British Steel and Koninklijke Hoogovens) offers comprehensive information on the company and its products, company financial data and teaching resources on maths, design, technology and the environment, with images available for educational use. It also has special areas for each key industry sector: aerospace, automotive, construction, consumer products, energy and power generation, engineering, packaging and rail, and product data for Corus products.   • Carpenter Technology Corp offers information about the company, including financial data, and online ordering of their product brochures. Detailed information on products can be accessed, and technical data is available to registered users. Uses Frames. [last looked at on 16 May 2008]

  • COSIPA, Companhia Siderurgica Paulista, a Brazilian steelmaker, appears to have been taken over by Usminas, and the English version of the website is currently under reconstruction. Uses Flash. [last looked at on 16 May 2008]

  • European Confederation of Iron and Steel Industries, Eurofer, offers a geographical overview of steel production in the EU. It offers market trends and analysis, a number of electronic publications, a newsletter, a list of events, a dictionary of steel terms and position papers on current issues. Uses Flash.   • JFE this links to the JFE website, a combined site for the merged Kawasaki Steel Corporation and NKK, that offers information on the companies, and Environmental Report. Separate sections exist for JFE Steel Products, JFE Engineering Business, and Kawasaki Microelectronics Inc., which give detail of products and areas of expertise. in English and Japanese.   • Kobe Steel provide information in Japanese and English covering corporate profile, Annual Report, finance, products and services, news releases and research. Kobelco's Welding Handbook is available online in English and Japanese.Technical reports for their products are included on the site. Kobe Steel Engineering Reports are available through the site from 1997 - 2007, as is Kobelco Technology Review for 2007 and its Centennial Edition for December 2005..   • Nippon Steel site is in Japanese and English. It offers a company profile, financial information, their environmental policy reports and details of their business areas and R&D activities. Current issue of Nippon Steel News and back issues to 2001 are available.   • Outokumpu presents a description of the company, product details (including information on welding consumables), information on stainless steels, news releases, recent financial reports and contact details. It includes a Steel Professional Tool for material selection. The site has a number of publications by Outokumpu staff. Uses Frames. [last looked at on 9 June 2008]

  • Posco offers information in Korean, English, Japanese and Chinese. Company details are given, Product details can be found through the Company heading and Products/Technology subheading, leading to the specific types of product produced, and then to a link on the page for each product type.   • Sandvik is an international, high-technology materials engineering group mainly concerned with cemented-carbide and steel products. They offer company information including financial data, press releases, and product listings. [last looked at on 9 June 2008]

  • Sumitomo Metals site is in Japanese and English. Describes the company, products and environmental policy and presents the company's Environmental Report and Annual Report. Sumitomo Metals Times, both current and back numbers, are available via the website. [last looked at on 9 June 2008]

  • Ternium, a Mexican company, offers information in Spanish and English on the company structure, finances and products. Uses Frames. [last looked at on 9 June 2008]

  • ThyssenKrupp offers pages in German and English to describe the company and its activities and gives recent financial data. The ThyssenKrupp base allows searching for companies and products within the group. The Annual Report is also included.   • Metal Bulletin offers information on their products and services, and publications, though this is not easy to find from the front page. Go into either the site map or divisions to find their products. Some information, such as conferences can only be obtained by accessing www.metalbulletin.com.   • The Navy Metalworking Center, formerly the National Centre for Excellence in Metalworking Technology. This site aims to apply state-of-the-art metalworking technology to Navy manufacturing problems. It covers metal casting, forming and forging, joining of materials, particulate materials - metals and ceramics, semi-solid metalworking (SSM) and surface treatment.It includes two engineering knowledge bases for registered users - the Atlas of Formability, comprising experimental data on over 120 materials, and the Thermophysical Properties EKB which includes information and data for modelling, control and optimisation of metalworking processes.   • The Corrosion Information Server at the UK University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) is operated by the International Corrosion Council, The Corrosion & Protection Centre, UMIST and CAPCIS Ltd. The NACE Corrosion Network and NACE Coatings Network list servers facilitate interaction between professionals working on corrosion prevention and control and in the coatings industry.   • Cost of Corrosion reports the results of an investigation of the cost to the US of corrosion across utilities, transportation, infrastructure, government, production and manufacturing (agriculture, chemicals, petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, electronics, food processing, domestic appliances, mining, petroleum refining, pulp and paper, oil and gas).
