FPSs and FPSOs/New build and conversion project reviews

New build and conversion project reviews

The offshore industry uses either new-build or FPSOs converted from VLCCs.

For new-build FPSOs, TWI has advised on design and construction quality assurance reviews for shipyards, design offices and operators in order to guarantee that the purpose-built hull structures satisfy the most stringent requirements faced during their design life. TWI has also developed engineering critical assessment (ECA) approaches for optimum fatigue and fracture control of the hull structure whilst identifying critical components and inspection intervals. This allows the development of optimised in-service inspection and in-service inspection planning.

The conversion of existing VLCCs to FPSOs is a viable option to many oil field developments. TWI has experience in the development of remaining life assessment approaches to assess the integrity of the FPSO in service. The issues affecting existing FPSO structures involve not only hull structural integrity but also asset management and risk-based maintenance. TWI can assist in the development and implementation of asset management techniques that can help operators to improve profitability without compromising the performance or safety of their structures.
