Update on TWI's Joint Industry Projects on Thermally Sprayed Aluminium (TSA) for the oil & gas sector (upstream and downstream)

JIP16734 'TSA alloys for the prevention of corrosion and environmentally assisted cracking of welded CRAs'.
TWI continues its work demonstrating the benefits of TSA to the oil and gas sector with the commencement of a third joint industry project. Following previous projects that looked at the behaviour of TSA coatings at elevated temperature on carbon steel and 22Cr duplex stainless steel, this new project focuses on demonstrating their ability to mitigate localised corrosion (pitting, crevice corrosion) and environmentally assisted cracking (chloride SCC, hydrogen embrittlement) in welded 25Cr superduplex stainless steels. One specific objective of the project is to identify a TSA alloy composition that polarises to a level that mitigates localised corrosion mechanisms without the risk of hydrogen charging.
