A-TIG for welding of stainless steels

Without activated flux
The conventional TIG process and weld profile Conventional TIG weld

With activated flux
The A-TIG process and weld profile A-TIG weld

Activated-flux TIG (A-TIG) enables single pass low distortion welding of stainless steels in a section depth widely used for nuclear waste containment.

The activated flux is applied prior to welding and produces a narrower deeper TIG weld.

Benefits

  • Shorter welding times
  • Reduced consumption of filler wire
  • Elimination of back-gouging and/or grinding
  • Reduced distortion
  • Reduced susceptibility to cast-to-cast variations in weld penetration
  • Activated fluxes give increased penetration in steels
  • Flux applied by spray, paste or brush applicator
TWI has carried out extensive investigations into the use of A-TIG. Facilities are available to allow member companies to explore the use of A-TIG in their applications.
