TWI's involvement in the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) programmes has included:

TWI is currently contracted to two parts of the ITER programme:

Project: ITER machine TF coil case - electron beam welding of model 1 (Part 1 test coupon C)
Scope: EB welding of 50mm thick ITER grade 316LN stainless steel

Project: Feasibility of producing vacuum vessel intersector field welds using reduced pressure electron beam welding ITER task GB8-T301
Scope: All-positional EB welding of 60 mm thick, low activation ITER grade 316L stainless steel

TWI's contribution to the ITER programme in the field of reduced pressure electron beam welding has recently been recorded in an article written by the European Fusion Development Association (EFDA) in the June 2000 issue of Welding and Metal Fabrication.

TWI also presented a paper on 'Advanced Welding Processes for Fusion Reaction Fabrication' at the Fifth International Symposium on Fusion Nuclear Technology in Rome in September 1999.

TWI was also contracted to the JET programme for the fabrication by EB welding of (copper and copper alloy) elements to the neutral beam injection system.
