Laser welding of stainless steels
Nd:YAG lasers offer a number of benefits when applied to fuel and waste encapsulation. Nd:YAG lasers can be delivered to the workpiece via a fibre optic cable. The process is highly suitable for remote welding, as the laser system can be outside of the active area, and can be readily deployed on robotic or similar systems. Equipment at TWI can be used to produce prototype parts and to demonstrate the feasibility of the technique. Up to 9kW of power is available, with suitable workpiece handling and robotic systems.
