RISKWISE for Boilers TM version 4 used to extend inspection interval at Kapar Power Station in Malaysia

Kapar Power Station in Malaysia

Kapar Power Station, a 2420 MW multi-fuelled thermal power plant is situated 55 km west of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Kapar Power Station operates with a total of 6 boilers and related pressure vessels, 3 steam turbines and one gas turbine.

Risk-Based Inspection (RBI) was initiated to complement the preventive and predictive maintenance activities. Kapar also wished to obtain approval from the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) to extend the statutory inspection period of all units from 15 months to a longer period. To facilitate this requirement risk profiles for the boiler and balance of plant (BOP) components were required to demonstrate that the assessed components are safe to operate for the extended period.

The RBI analysis was undertaken using TWI's RISKWISE for Boilers TM Version 4 software, which has been approved by DOSH for this purpose in Malaysia and Kapar is anticipating getting the approval to extend their inspection interval beyond 36 months.

RISKWISE TM contracted by ESB Ireland

ESB Ireland

TWI and ESB (Electricity Supply Board) are to undertake a Risk-Based Inspection (RBI) study of ESB's Aghada Station in Ireland.

Aghada Station is one of the largest electricity generating facilities in Ireland. Fuelled by natural gas, it was commissioned in 1980 and was Ireland's largest electricity producer during the first few years of its operation. As one of the larger and more efficient stations in the country, Aghada's commercial performance is crucial to the future success of ESB in the deregulated electricity market.

The RBI study will involve the implementation of RISKWISE TM on the Unit 1 270MW steam plant. The benefits, in terms of outage inspection and maintenance optimisation will be fully documented. The work signals a move by ESB to an Asset Management approach for their fleet and it is hoped that RISKWISE TM will be another useful tool in optimising the use of their plant.

RISKWISE for Boilers TM version 4.1

RISKWISE for Boilers TM Version 4.0 released early in 2007 was a substantial upgrade on Version 3. Version 4.1 now includes several new practical features to improve consistency and user-friendliness as well as speeding up the RBI process. The main new features are as follows:

  • Damage mechanisms are automatically output for each equipment item
  • New input fields in the 'Inspection Methods' and 'Damage Mechanisms' screens automatically determine the 'Inspection Effectiveness' for each damage mechanism
  • Likelihood or probability factors as well as safety and availability consequences are now arrived at in fully automated manner on the 'Risk Factors' screen (with the option for user intervention as required)
  • A creep life module including corrosion where appropriate is fully integrated to enable automatic calculation of the failure probability or likelihood sequence and hence the remaining life indicator (RLI)
  • A thermal fatigue life module has been added to enable the failure risks and RLI to be automatically output for components subject to cyclic life expenditure
  • Probabilities and economic consequences of failure can now be output quantitatively in terms of failure rates and $ values or MWhrs lost respectively
  • For benchmarking purposes, the software now incorporates database software giving failure rates and MWhrs lost for equipment items covering a population of over 1000 boilers. This utilises the North American Reliability Corp. - Generation Availability Data System (NERC-GADS)
  • Optional modules are now available to facilitate interface protocols with plant CMMS or PI systems (SAP, Maximo, etc)
  • An optional module is available to allow on-line input and analysis of transient operational data thereby enabling focused inspection and maintenance planning during operation, particularly in respect of unforeseen operational upsets (up-shocks or down-shocks)

RISKWISE TM in India

ESB Ireland

TWI were recently warmly welcomed to India by Engineers India Ltd (EIL). More than thirty delegates attended the three day Risk-Based Inspection (RBI) and RISKWISE TM workshop held at EILs New Delhi Office. The course focused on transfer of TWI's RBI technology to EIL and provided an understanding in the practical use and application of RISKWISE TM to industrial plant.

EIL are currently in discussions with national oil and gas and chemical facilities throughout India, with the intention of using RISKWISE TM as their RBI management tool, aiding their asset integrity management services.
