Fatigue qualification of girth welds

Sub-sea pipelines and risers are subjected to unpredictable loading in service due to tidal variances. It is therefore vital for pipeline engineers to be confident that the pipelines in service, and in particular the girth welds, will remain intact throughout their lifetime. TWI performs a range of fatigue testing to qualify girth welds in pipes and risers.

  • Rotating bending tests in resonance at high frequency
  • Static internal pressure loading
  • Mechanical static axial loading up to 250 tonnes
  • Through thickness crack detection system
  • Out of roundness compensation
  • Facilities capable of testing 4 - 36 inch diameter pipes
  • Detailed post test analysis
  • Axial misalignment measurement
  • Fracture surfaces examination
  • Complete analysis to API or DnV design codes
  • Extensive database of results for comparison
