Non-destructive testing for forgings
The Toolform programme, joint funded by the DTI, Yorkshire Forward and Objective 1, has assisted in the development of inspectors for Non Destructive Testing evaluation techniques at a Livingston based forging company.
Proclad International Forgings Ltd, part of the Proclad Group, is a leading supplier of forged and formed components for use in the petrochemical, nuclear and oil and gad industries. Examples of forged parts produced by the company include hollow extruded pipe, tees, elbows, reducers and caps.

The company also manufactures special fittings such as lateral tees, extruded manifolds, guide bar and sphere tees, high pressure manifold fittings, mandrel forged bends, forged seamless pipe and forged high pressure assemblies. Components can range in size from 50mm to 1,050mm in diameter. The products are typically produced using materials including:
- X52-X70
- alloy steels, austenitic stainless steels
- duplex steels, super duplex steels, clad steels
- Nickel alloys such as 625 and alloy 825
Proclad International Forgings has developed a patented process for the manufacture of clad co-extruded pipe, called Proclad WEX. This involves the extrusion of a metallurgically bonded clad billet in order to produce fully metallurgically bonded pipe. The range of sizes can be from 50-762mm diameter in 12m lengths, with wall thickness of 6mm or greater. A wide variety of high integrity corrosion resistant alloys can be used. Due to the bonding process, any type of elbow or induction bend can be manufactured from the standard pipe and easily fabricated into manifold systems.
TWI was able to provide on-site assistance to Proclad International Forgings Ltd, by developing staff skills in non destructive testing (NDT) techniques to ASNT Level 1 and 2 standards. Using the company's own forged components as demonstration pieces, the staff were able to detect indications and defects arising from production processing.
