Introduction

The Renewable Energy Manufacturing Technology Centre (REMTEC) is the North East region's technical support facility for the sustainable and alternative energy sectors.

REMTEC facility

REMTEC extends the resources of TWI's Middlesbrough facility at Riverside Park. Leading-edge fabrication and processing technologies are available to assist companies already serving the renewable energy sector, and to support businesses that can potentially supply products and services to this strategically important, growth industry.

The facilities

Waves

Key facilities at REMTEC are planned to include:

  • Tandem twin-wire submerged-arc welding system for high productivity linear and circumferential welding of thick sections up to 3m long and 2m diameter

  • Mechanised TIG and MIG/MAG welding equipment for precision welding and cladding of components

  • Reduced pressure electron beam welding, capable of welding steel up to 200mm thick in a single pass

  • Electron beam texturing ( Surfi-Sculpt ® ) for rapidly producing surface features in applications such as metal-to-composite bonds and heat exchangers

  • Polymer matrix composites processing using infusion technologies for component manufacture and repair

  • Wet-film coating line for development, processing and characterisation of protective, transparent/conductive, anti-reflection (AR) and anti-soiling/fouling organic and inorganic (sol-gel) coatings; and for adhesive bonding pre-treatments

The above facilities complement those already established at TWI's Middlesbrough technology centre, here's a brief overview -

Welder
  • Underwater operations centre - indoor, deepwater diving tank and 24 hour hyperbaric facility more information

  • MIG/MAG, MMA, TIG and plasma welding equipment

  • Conventional and advanced non-destructive testing equipment such as automated phased array ultrasonics

  • Thermoplastic sheet and pipe fabrication - a comprehensive range of equipment including hot gas, hotplate and electrofusion welding

TWI's Middlesbrough technology centre supports sub-sea/offshore operators, the sustainable and alternative energy sectors and all areas of engineering manufacturing. Services include -

  • Training in a broad range of welding and inspection technologies
  • Internationally recognised examinations, e.g. CSWIP and Lloyds
