Pembrokeshire-based AC Automation Services Ltd designs and fabricates piping assemblies for the water treatment industry. Mild steel and stainless steel are MMA welded, with root runs produced by TIG welding.
The company was keen to improve the efficiency of its welding operations whilst maintaining the quality of its products. AC Automation were already producing welded fabrications of the required physical quality: what was missing was a formalised system by which they could demonstrate their control and proficiency to clients.
Through the Joining Forces Wales technology transfer programme, AC Automation was able to take advantage of a two-day Product and Process Review followed by a five-day Feasibility Study.
Working closely with the company, TWI Welding Engineer Dave Godfrey set up a revised welding Q.A. system, along with welding consumable and weld procedure registers. He also produced a suite of welding procedures covering the different types of material, joint, welding position and welding process used by the company.
AC Automation is in the process of implementing this enhanced QA system, and the benefits of putting welding operations on a more formal footing are expected to include a greater level of customer confidence and a reduction in costs, due to a more uniform approach to welding operations.
