Malaysian students visit TWI north
On 29th July, 20 Malaysian students attending a 15-week summer semester course at Sheffield Hallam University visited the TWI Technology Centre at the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP) in South Yorkshire.

The students from the Tunku Abdul Rahman College (TARC), Malaysia were given lectures by TWI's Mark Roughsedge and Steve Cater before touring the facilities. The students, all of whom are working towards their Advanced Diploma in Materials and Manufacturing Engineering were able to gain not only an insight into the services and facilities offered by TWI, but also a technical understanding which supported the joining technology and NDT element of their studies.

Steve Dodds, organiser from Sheffield Hallam University, commented, “We are extremely grateful to TWI for taking the time to welcome the students to the site. Mark and Steve were able to show us around and the answer the many questions that the students asked about the technologies they saw, such as direct metal deposition and friction-stir welding. The opportunity to witness the friction-stir welding of steel was a particular highlight". Professor Alan Smith of SHU added, "Whilst the theory behind such technology is important, practical visits like this are vitally important to their continual development. We hope to make this an annual event for future TARC summer semesters.”

The visit also made the students aware of TWI's S.E Asia Training and Certification centre - situated just 8 miles away from the Tunku Abdul Rahman College in Kuala Lumpur.

Sector manager Mark Roughsedge said, “It was a real pleasure to welcome these students to the AMP. They were all very attentive, keen to learn and asked some really intelligent questions. We were more than happy to pass on our experience and hope they benefited from their time here.”
