TWI develops essential metallography training to ensure best practice

Metallography training to ensure best practice
Announcing the launch of Practical Laboratory Based Metallography and Practical Field Based Metallography courses

Understanding the relationship between the properties and microstructures of metallic materials plays an extremely important part in quality control, failure investigation and development of new materials and alloys. Many properties of metallic materials like corrosion resistance, yield strength, hardness, elongation, conductivity and tensile strength are closely related to the microstructure.

As such, microstructure examination is an extremely important test method that can be used to determine the possible failure mode of a component, detect fabrication defects and confirm correct material selection.

Excellence in this discipline is central to the competencies that have enabled TWI to work with major industry sectors including oil and  gas, power, and aerospace over many years.

New courses

Recognising the skills’ gaps in best practice in the metallography discipline, TWI has developed two new training courses to address these needs; Practical Laboratory Based Metallography (3 days) and Practical Field Metallography (2 days).

The courses can be attended separately or as a single five-day combined package: Practical Laboratory and Field Metallography Combined Package.

Course sessions cover both the theoretical and practical skills required to produce good quality samples and techniques for analysis and will give delegates an understanding of equipment and consumables’ requirements for modern lab-based and field metallography.

Those considering setting up a metallographic capability or operating existing facilities will also find these courses important in gaining the required knowledge for laboratory and field best practice.
