Welding sparks interest at WorldSkills UK

The Welding Institute would like to congratulate the competitors and winners at the recent WorldSkills UK event held at the NEC in Birmingham for their demonstrations of skill and high standards of achievement. The Welding Institute, in conjunction with the Skills Council for Science, Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies (SEMTA), sponsored three categories of event for young engineers and apprentices: Construction Metal Works, SkillPIPE: Heating and Ventilation, plus a Welding demonstration competition.

Welding
  • Gold      Richard Keatman, Alstom Power
  • Silver    Sam Owen, Doosan Power Systems

SkillPIPE: Heating and Ventilation

  • Gold     Patrick O'Leary, NG Bailey Engineering Academy
  • Silver   Luke Jarrett, Croydon College
  • Bronze Joshua Skill, Shepherd Engineering Services

Skills Minister Matthew Hancock offered his congratulations to the competitors and said: 'Vocational skills helped make the UK in generations past. Vocational skills will build Britain's future. I very much hope today’s winners will inspire the stars of tomorrow.'

The Skills Show saw over 500 young apprentices take part in 61 WorldSkills UK National Competitions. The Show was attended by Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, who was a visitor at The Welding Institute exhibition stand, and the Show’s Skills Patron and Dragon’s Den star Theo Paphitis.
