World Intellectual Property Organization offers information on its activities and publications, including details of patent, trademark and copyright protection treaties. The Intellectual Property Digital Library gives access to bibliographic data, abstracts and drawings for published PCT International patent applications.

European Patent Office provides information on its products, services and publications. This site gives good coverage to all aspects of patents. Free patent searching is available via the European Patent Office service Esp@cenet, which gives access to patent applications in their original language from the European Patent Office and from WIPO, and to patent applications with an English abstract and title worldwide (30 million documents).

United States Patent and Trademark Office offers searching of US-issued patents back to 1976, giving full reference and abstract ( ie front page) or complete text and illustrations, with online ordering. Patents from 1790 to 1975 are searchable by patent number and current US classification. Patent applications published since March 2001 are available for full text searching. General information about patents and the activities of this office is also presented.

UK Patent Office offers information on its services, news items, and brief guidance on patents and other intellectual property topics. Databases available include: Esp@cenet for UK, European, International (PCT), Japanese and other countries' applications; patent status information service; patents and designs journal.

Derwent provide extensive background information on patents as well as details of their wide range of patent information services including DWPI (Derwent World Patents Index.).

The British Library holds 47 million patent specifications from over 40 countries and much supporting literature. It has a number of databases and a payable research service Patents Online. Many links to other patent resources are provided.
