Market Statistics

There are three major sources of market statistics. These are government or inter-government websites including statistics of national importance; market survey websites where market surveys can be searched and then either purchased in hard copy or accessed on a subscription basis; and finally some independent company or organisational websites that include a variety of statistics.

UK National Statistics Online
This website of UK statistics is a treasure trove of information if you can work through its very complex set up. Industry statistics and employment statistics can be found. For some statistics, however, like the number of welders in the UK, there's nothing for it but to pick up the phone and call them.

US Government website
The number of different sites available through the US government website makes it an Aladdin's cave of information, but you have to be prepared to spend some time searching through to find what you need. Start at: www.firstgov.gov/ For the joining industry, the most useful departmental sites are: Department of Transport: www.rspa.dot.gov, and Department of Energy: www.eia.doe.gov/

OECD
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development has a variety of statistical publications on its website, ranging across: Science and Technology International Compendium; maritime transport statistics; road transport statistics; key world energy statistics; oil market report and much more.

Eurostat
This is the website of the statistical programme of the European Community. It allows access to many sets of useful statistics, such as economic data; energy, transport and environment indicators; science, technology and innovation key figures pocketbooks.

Profound
This is a subscription site, run by Dialog, designed to help you find market information. It contains market, country and company briefings (US biased), a wire news service and 200,000 full text market surveys from approximately 80 well known companies. The subscription is high, and downloading of information from the surveys incurs further cost, but if you cover a wide variety of markets it may be a worthwhile investment.
