In the last few years there has been phenomenal growth in the development of medical devices and new biomaterials, and this Webwatch can do no more than select a few sites to provide a way in to this mass of material.
MDDI - Medical Device and Diagnostic Industry is a monthly magazine for original equipment manufacturers of medical devices and in vitro diagnostic products. Its aim is to help them develop, design, and manufacture medical products that comply with current regulations and market requirements. The website is also home to a range of features including industry news and events, news blogs, and webcasts.

Qmed (not to be confused with Q-med) offers a similar service, including a daily bulletin of product, technology and business news stories. It also has a White Paper Library, a free resource to aid medical device professionals in research and development. The papers encompass a variety of topics relevant to the design, manufacturing, and marketing of medical devices.

REACH is a body of regulations that affects all industries, not just medical device manufacturers, that use chemicals in their manufacturing processes. It is a European regulation concerning the Regulation, Evaluation, Authorisation and restriction of Chemicals. It came into force in June 2007 and replaces a number of European Regulations and Directives with a single system. The UK take on the regulations is on the HSE website as below.

The US Food and Drug Administration is an agency within the US Department of Health and Human Services. Its Medical Devices product centre is responsible for protecting the public health by, amongst other things, assuring the safety, effectiveness, and security of medical devices. Although concerned mainly with US legislation it contains a wide range of information about what is still the largest market for medical device technology.

MedlinePlus is a service of the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, and covers a multitude of biomedical topics. Most famously it hosts the Medline database of abstracts of articles on all aspects of medicine, but it also contains such features as a medical dictionary and a medical encyclopaedia.
