There’s also news of progress on Mainline, a unique £4m project tailored to the needs of railway asset managers, as well as friction stir welding development in both steel, for shipbuilding, and gold and silver for jewellery manufacture.

TWI has started its own channel on YouTube. To date 39 short programmes are in place and already they have attracted more than 10 000 hits. This is only the start of TWI's drive for greater public consumption of its moving image library. Its film and video archive includes thousands of cassettes of footage much of which is pioneering material. Access to the image archive is an Industrial Member service so please contact us if you need moving pictures of a joining related subject.

For Industrial Members involved in the non- destructive examination of plastics pipes there’s news of the TestPEP project devised two years ago to identify and test an automated non-destructive evaluation approach to testing welded joints and plastics pipes. 2012 is the third and final year of the project. Contact the polymers section of TWI about the findings when they are available.

Another new service available to TWI’s Industrial Members involves TWI’s ability to independently validate a manufacturer’s claims about a new product. Such a service can often be a critical step in gaining acceptance by clients or regulators for safety critical systems. In the interests of commercial independence and impartiality TWI does not endorse the products and services of its Industrial Members.
