The University of Cambridge/TWI Postgraduate Training Partnership (PTP) - offering PhD training in an industrially oriented environment - is recruiting its October 1999 intake of research students.

The Partnership is one of eight formed in a joint initiative of the UK's Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). The PTP scheme has twin objectives - industry-related research training of well-qualified graduates leading to a PhD, and transfer of new skills and knowledge to Industry.

The research projects undertaken within the TWI/Cambridge Partnership are generally developed from TWI's core programme, which spans the whole field of joining technology and materials engineering. They are jointly supervised by a TWI expert and an academic from one of four University Departments - Materials Science and Metallurgy, Engineering, Physics or Applied Maths and Theoretical Physics. Projects require a three year, full-time commitment, and as well as working on a project with clearly-defined industrial objectives, students receive formal training in the core competencies for a career in industry.

Read more information about the PTP scheme including typical projects, or contact Richard Smith at TWI.
