Roy Nichols, chairman in the early 1980s of The Welding Institute's Professional Board and also Chairman of Council from 1983-5 died in May aged 75.

He was a great supporter of many Institute activities and acted as Director for some of The Welding Institute's most successful conferences.

In 1968 a working party was set up to consider development of an independent scheme for examination and approval of personnel engaged in non-destructive testing of welded structures. Roy Nichols was the obvious choice to head a committee overseeing the new scheme - the Certification Scheme for Weldment Inspection Personnel or CSWIP for short - an appointment he held for over 15 years. Over 25 000 examinations were held and some 9 800 certificates issued during this period, some as a result of examinations conducted at overseas locations.

Roy will be long remembered as the guiding light that gave CSWIP its pre-eminent position in the training of NDT and inspection personnel.
