The Memorandum of Understanding being signed during the CIDB visit to TWI

TWI recently hosted a visit from senior management of the Construction Industry Development Board of Malaysia (CIDB). CIDB have the responsibility of improving construction standards throughout Malaysia and developing the skillslevels of construction workers. The CIDB visited TWI to review the ways in which TWI is able to assist them in this process and their review included an appraisal of the work TWI is carrying out in the construction and engineeringsector, but also TWI's Training and CSWIP Certification activities.

The visitors included the Chairman of CIDB, Y.Bhg. Tan Sri Dato' Ir. Wan A Rahman Yaacob, the Chief Executive Y.Bhg. Dato' Haji Abdul Rahman Abdullah and the General Manager Mr Amir Abdullah. The group was accompanied by the GeneralSecretary of the Ministry of Works Malaysia Datuk Dr Hadenan Jalil. The visit culminated in CIDB and TWI signing a memorandum of understanding which covered co-operation for welder training in Malaysia and development of a jointCIDB/CSWIP welder qualification.

It is the intention of CIDB to introduce mandatory certification for welders and it is anticipated that other welding and inspection personnel will be certified under a similar arrangement in the future.

The first training facility will be at the CIDB's Academy of Construction in Jahor Baru, Malaysia and training and certification will commence at the end of March 2000.
