Three examples of TWI's trademarked technologies were exhibited at the 15
th International Welding Fair
Schweissen & Schneiden in Essen this autumn.
This fair is held every four years and proved again to be the world's leading exhibition of welding technologies, this year with over 93 000 visitors.
Eurostir®, the pan-European project with 31 collaborators from six countries, is working on further industrialisation of friction stir welding first commercialised in Scandinavia.
The Swedish Eurostir ® collaborator ESAB displayed two friction stir welding machines on their stand at Essen on which they produced joints between aluminium extrusions - a typical application for makingprefabricated panels for ships and trains.
LinFric ® is a prototype hydraulic linear friction welding machine which was developed in a collaborative CRAFT project managed by TWI. Please check the www.linfric.comwebsite for more information. Klaus Raiser GmbH showed linear friction welded samples in steel, titanium and aluminium. TWI exhibited an aero engine turbine from MTU Munich who have produced over 100 engines for the Eurofighter wherethe blades are linear friction welded to the discs. Harms & Wende offers fuzzy logic control and monitoring systems for the LinFric ® machines and demonstrated them with a small friction stud weldingmachine on their stand.
