Lead free soldering goes to Taiwan

Connect, no.114, September - October 2001, p.7

TWI has recently signed their first collaboration agreement with ITRI, the Industrial Technology Research Institute of Taiwan, on the transfer of lead free soldering materials and reliability technology to Taiwanese industry.

This forms part of a larger programme of work to provide support to the local industry through materials development, production control, reliability assessment and performance predictions. The programme will involve a team of UK experts drawn from leading research establishments, with TWI providing the main delivery and co-ordinating the other UK participants.

ITRI will run their own major research programme in parallel with the technology transfer programme.

The programme forms TWI's first large contract with Taiwan, and it is planned that future collaborations will develop with ITRI for the electronics and other sectors.

The programme was drawn together with assistance from the British Trade and Cultural Office in Taiwan, who had the responsibility of identifying suitable providers of the technology, and considerable support was also provided by Boeing's Offset Programme in Taiwan.
