Connect, no.127, November - December 2003, p.8

The new UK Specification for Professional Engineers and Technicians, launched by the Engineering Council (UK) in June, is expected to be formally adopted before the end of the year. The new specification, based on SARTOR 3(Standards and Routes to Registration), will allow increased flexibility to institutions and individuals whilst maintaining standards.

What does this mean for those aspiring to CEng, IEng and EngTech?

The new standards will concentrate on professional engineering competences. Professional Development to achieve the required competences requires a planned approach to establish a profile of competence and needs and an annualprofessional development plan. The support of a Mentor is valuable in planning and developing these competences. Further information can be obtained from the Professional Division: e-mail: professional@twi.co.uk

Where candidates do not hold the benchmark academic qualification for CEng or IEng, there will be a unified approach to assessment based on a career appraisal and technical report. Look out for further details on timescale forimplementation.
