Lidstone medal winner at TWI
Dr Suresh Babu, the winner of the 2002 Lidstone Medal, paid a special visit to TWI in October to receive his award from Bevan Braithwaite. This was followed by a lecture to TWI staff on Application of computational models and in-situ characterisations to understand weld microstructure evolution in steels in which he discussed the research he carried out to determine the accuracy with which computer modelling could be used to predict the weld metal microstructures developed in steels.
The Lidstone medal, sponsored by ESAB UK Ltd, is awarded annually to the person under 40 years of age which is deemed to have made the most significant contribution to the advancement of welding technology during the period of five years preceding the year of the award.

Amy Durrant collecting her certificate
from Ivan Lewis MP UK Skills recently celebrated the achievements of 31 young people who competed at the WorldSkills Competition in St Gallen Switzerland in the summer of 2003.
Amongst the team was Amy Durrant from Brigg, Lincolnshire who represented the UK in the welding competition. She received her certificate from Ivan Lewis MP, Minister for Skills and Vocational Education.
Ivan Lewis said: 'I am delighted to celebrate the success of the UK Team. Through their achievements these young men and women illustrate the high standards of vocational education and training that exist in this country.'

Professor Mehdi Tavakoli
Mehdi has recently been appointed visiting Professor to Queen Mary College, University of London, through the Materials Department. This recognition comes from Mehdi's expertise and enthusiasm for his fields of polymer science, adhesion and biomedical polymers.
