Aerospace team to benefit from Boeing training

Richard Freeman who leads TWI's aerospace sector team has been selected to attend a course run by the Boeing Leadership Centre in St Louis. Titled 'Leading from the middle' the course has been approved by DESO as part of Boeing'soffset obligation in the UK. DESO is the UK Defence Export Services Organisation, a branch of the Ministry of Defence.

Richard's name was put forward by the UK Defence Manufacturers' Association because of TWI's excellent and long-established relationship with Boeing and will result in gaining in-depth knowledge into the way Boeing develops itsmanagers and their future strategies.

Forensic engineering - Younger Persons Event 2005

Sheffield Hallam University - Thursday 17 November 2005

The Younger Persons Event will introduce forensic engineering and failure investigations by explaining how to recognise the main failure mechanisms, and outline the approach for carrying out a successful failure investigation.

The event is aimed at students or new graduates in materials/metallurgy, physical sciences or engineering disciplines. It is open to all younger persons, including non-members. Those attending and not already in membership of TheWelding Institute or the Welding & Joining Society will be given one year's free membership of the WJS. Recently three staff members at TWI have contributed to technical publications which demonstrate the range of expertise available to Industrial Member companies.

Dr Anita Buxton has written three articles on the welding of plastics which appears in the Handbook of Adhesion, 2nd Edition published by John Wiley and Sons. Marcus Warwick is also a contributor. A chapter on joining similar and dissimilar materials written by Dr Ewen Kellar appears in Adhesive bonding - science, technology and applications. This book is published by Woodhead Publishing Ltd. Surfaces and interfaces for biomaterials contains a chapter written by Professor Mehdi Tavakoli on the subject of surface modification of polymers to enhance biocompatibility. This publication is also from Woodhead PublishingLtd.
