New centre for the power industry

TWI Technology Centre (North East) in Middlesbrough opened its Low Carbon Energy Manufacturing Technology Centre on 2nd October with five new technology areas being demonstrated. These focused on manufacturing improvements,performance and cost reduction for the wind tower and turbine sector.

The new centre was officially opened by Wyn Jones, Managing Director of Alcan Aluminium UK, with presentations from Dr Bob John, TWI, Dr Derek Allen, Technology Strategy Board, Ian Williams, ONE NE and Terry O'Neill of TWI.

The centre houses the latest technologies for reduced pressure electron beam welding, tandem twin wire submerged arc welding, SurfiSculpt, electron beam texturing, composites and microwave drying and coatings.

Over 60 guests from industry and the region attended the event and the centre was funded with support from ONE NE, TeesValley and the European Regional Development Fund.
