A collaboration between TWI and Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design has resulted in a novel method of giving recycled fabric a new lease of life using a laser welding process which is known as mono finishing.

Customised patterning is achieved by using the laser in combination with an absorber to produce repeatable complex patterns which can be produced quickly in a manufacturing situation.

Because there is no need to subject the material to physical and chemical treatments, the recyclability of the fabric is not compromised. Feasibility studies have also shown that the technique does not affect the outer surface and feel of the fabric.
