Help with adhesives training

Connect, no.77, June 1996

Packages to help train University students in adhesive technology have been developed by TWI and The British Adhesives and Sealants Association (BASA).

Adhesive technology is one of the most important enabling technologies available to industry today. Engineers now being trained for the future should be made aware of its potential role in tomorrow's industry.

BASA has compiled a teaching package which can be used by lecturers of Design, Manufacturing and Materials courses. Trials on what to include were carried out at several UK Universities. The result is a teaching aid of lecture notesplus 60 coloured overheads, covering: adhesive types and selection; adhesion; joint design and some case histories.

TWI's package was developed to complement this, drawing on help from seven European countries. In-depth information, to give a greater awareness, is designed for use by lecturers and undergraduates for research and project work. Thematerial is available on CD-ROM or as hard copy. Topics covered include: adhesive selection; surface preparation for metals and plastics; aspects of health and safety; value management; automation; design and bonding practise.

Using adhesives in manufacturing helps a company to reduce overall costs as well as improve product performance. They can be used to replace many conventional joining methods for a wide range of materials. New uses for adhesivetechnology are continually being developed; these teaching packages aim to transfer this knowledge into industry.
