Joining Forces, the TWI/DTI technology transfer programme helping manufacturers benefit from best practice in materials joining, nowhas seven Technology Demonstrators operational with many more soon to be up and running. Connect takes a brief look at the role of Demonstrators; which is to help companies decide on the best and most relevant technology for theirapplication.
Demonstrators show joining technology in action using a practical, hands-on approach and are designed to provide an understanding of the business and technical issues involved in making changes to manufacturing routes.
Technology Demonstrators, which are audited annually by TWI to ensure a consistently high level of service, provide:
- first-hand access to best practice in action
- impartial advice from competent personnel able to explain how the technology will help improve business performance
- up-to-date, working equipment set up to be representative of use in production
- practical examples showing successful use of the technology
- easy access to Product and Process Reviews, Feasibility Studies and other Joining Forces support services
There are four Technology demonstrators at TWI's Abington headquarters: microtechnology, arc welding, sheet joining and adhesives. These will soon be complemented by surfacing, plastics and cutting.
The aim is provide a national network, and demonstration facilities at the Eutectic Company Ltd, Myers Welding Ltd and Oerlikon Welding Ltd have recently come on-stream. More about these in future issues of Connect.
