Underwater welding work expands at TWI North

The increasing variety of underwater projects in TWI North's unique tank facility recently included a survey of commercially available underwater welding consumables.

The project was carried out in a depth of 6.5m on 8mm thick plate in vertical down and overhead positions. Rigorous testing simulated welding required in repair of offshore structures, ship repair or harbour sheet pile work. Thewelding and evaluation of electrode handleability was carried out by qualified experienced welder divers.
